New certification for KLINGER gasket materials in use with hydrogen
KLINGER further expands its comprehensive portfolio of approvals with the successful certification of flat gasket materials for hydrogen applications up to 100 Vol.-%.
The growing importance of hydrogen as an energy carrier demands innovative solutions in sealing technology. KLINGER is pleased to announce that several of our proven flat gasket materials have been successfully tested and certified for use with hydrogen as part of the DVGW certification program ZP 5123. This certification ensures the suitability of our products for applications with up to 100 Vol.-% hydrogen.

The ZP 5123 certification program
The new testing and certification program of the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW) evaluates flat gasket materials for use in hydrogen applications. The aim of the program is to determine the specific leakage rate of sealing materials when exposed to hydrogen (H2) to enable a well-founded selection of materials for specific applications.
KLINGER Dichtungstechnik, under the leadership of Stephan Piringer (Head of Development), was actively involved in developing the foundations for this DVGW Cert GmbH certification program. In collaboration with experts from the sealing industry and the DVGW research center at the Engler-Bunte Institute of KIT, a comprehensive evaluation method was developed to ensure the safety and efficiency of sealing materials in hydrogen systems.

„We are delighted that our products have now been assessed by the DVGW for this growing market. This confirmation gives our customers additional assurance that our sealing materials are reliable and safe to use with hydrogen. These certificates and our participation in the certification program underscore our commitment to advancing sustainable technologies."

Comparison with nitrogen and other test criteria
The certification program is based on materials that have already received DVGW certification in accordance with DIN 3535-6. The focus is on comparing the leakage rates of hydrogen and nitrogen, which allows a more precise assessment of the suitability of materials for hydrogen applications. In addition, the basic material compatibility with hydrogen, methane, helium and nitrogen is tested using the material table specified in DIN EN ISO 11114-2.
In contrast to DIN 3535-6, no specific limit value for the H2-specific leakage rate is defined. Instead, an additional material parameter, the H2-specific leakage rate, is determined without specifying a limit value. However, these results help to assess the behavior of the materials with regard to H2 applications.
User's responsibility
It is important to note that the certification program only provides information on the testing of gasket materials in relation to hydrogen and does not cover molded parts, as design aspects play a role in those cases. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the user to evaluate the determined values in the context of the specific application environment. Factors such as system volume and ventilation must be considered to ensure a safe and effective application.
Certificates now available
The certificates of the above mentioned KLINGER products are now available on our website. This certification highlights the universal suitability of our products for hydrogen applications and ensures that our customers can rely on the quality and reliability of KLINGER even in future-oriented markets such as hydrogen technology.
